In my world every day is an adventure filled with the appeal of history and the promise of discovery.
There’s something captivating about unearthing treasures from the past, each item telling a story, embodying a piece of history, and carrying with it a unique charm that some contemporary items can lack. Navigating this world involves a keen eye, a love for history, understanding what items will resell for and of course, a little bit of luck.
When I’m out and about looking for the next treasure there are a number of factors which help me decide what to source and what makes an interesting find…
Deciding what to buy
When browsing vendor stalls or scouring the local reclamation yard, I often consider several factors before deciding on products for Attic to Cellar:
- Condition: The item’s state is paramount. I look for pieces that, while perhaps showing signs of wear, still possess integrity.
- Background: Items with a documented history or notable past owners pique my interest. A background adds depth to the narrative and can significantly enhance an item’s value.
- Craftsmanship: I am drawn to exquisite workmanship. Whether it’s a hand-carved piece of furniture, hand blown glass or a unique piece from the past, skill and creativity
- Market Trends: While I prefer to follow my instincts, being aware of current market trends help to guide my decisions. Certain styles or periods might be in demand, and aligning with those can lead to savvy purchases.
- Personal Connection: Lastly, I often buy items that resonate with me personally. If something evokes a memory or sparks joy, it’s likely to find a place on Attic to Cellar. Those quirky finds always bring a smile to my collection.
What makes an interesting find?
To me an interesting find is more than just a beautiful object, it’s an encounter with history. Whether it’s discovering an overlooked painting in a charity shop or a vintage piece of clothing, my compelling finds often share a few common traits:
- Uniqueness: I love items that stand out due to unusual design, rare materials, or peculiar features
- Stories: I adore pieces that come with a backstory such as books or photographs found alongside them, shedding light on previous owners and the lives they led.
- Connection to a time period: Items that embody a specific era often trigger nostalgia and fascination; our militaria collection is a perfect example of this.
For me, the sourcing process for Attic to Cellar and my customers is such a fulfilling journey, filled with the excitement of discovery, the search for something unique and the joy of connecting with the past. Every find I make, be it mundane or extraordinary has a story to tell either in the product or how I came to source it, and I love that these stories can be shared with the next person and the next…
